This basically means how long it takes to transform the liquid crystal to the state that will display the correct color. The higher the response time, the more blurry the images will be, especially images moving on black backgrounds.

The connection between the LCD monitor and the computer also makes a major difference in picture quality. LCD monitors have an AGP port just like CRT’s do, but they also have another port called DVI, which instead of being analog it uses a digital signal. Digital connections have less picture and color loss than an analog one, but do require you to have a DVI port on your computer. If your computer doesn’t have one, then you have to buy a new video card that does and install it.

Now that you have the basic knowledge that you need to know when buying an LCD monitor, you are prepared to buy one at your local store or online. Before you go though, I just wanted to say that I have owned an LCD for the past 2 years and I could never go back to a CRT monitor, my eyes have been spoiled! The picture quality is just that good, plus not to mention how much more desk space I have and the fact that I am using less power feels good too. Most of the LCD's basic color reaches 6 digits, that is 64 types of performance indicators, then each independent pixel has 64×64×64=262144 kinds of colors. A majority of the LCD has only 262,144 colors, even the high-grade ones. The 32 digits(16,777,216) labeled by the manufacturers stems from interpolation or dithering algorithm, which is far poorer than the real 32 digits. The display can present a good color if it reaches 26M.

The question of LCD vs Plasma TV's is one that seems to plague many TV shoppers. It used to be very simple, there was only on kind of TV available and all the consumer needed to do was compare features and manufacturers. 2. Do you like sports or other faster action entertainment? As we discussed earlier, a regular plasma will be better than a regular LCD for faster action. However, for a true sports fan a 120hz LCD would be the best possible choice. The faster sports action, especially at the higher range of screen size would be worth the investment for someone who spends a good deal of time enjoying sports entertainment. A good rule of thumb would be, if you spend extra money subscribing to the sport specialty channels than you should really consider the investment in a 120hz LCD

3. Is there a lot of light in the room, or is it more subdued? This is a slightly less important consideration but still a question of note. LCD screens tend to be a matte rather than glossy and as such will not show much glare even in a room with a lot of windows.

LCD monitors are not the same size as CRT monitors. LCD monitors are actually larger for the same sized CRT monitor! Monitor measurements are measured diagonally. When computer monitors hit the scene, the measurement became the diagonal measurement of the tube itself, not the actual viewable screen. For example, my 19 inch CRT monitor, measuring the actual image from the bottom left hand corner of the picture to the upper right hand corner is actually 17.25 inches, or in other words, only .25 inches larger than 17 inches, if the monitor measurement were the actual viewing screen this 19 inch monitor would only qualify as a 17 inch LCD monitor. LCD monitors are measured by actual viewable area of the screen. A 17 inch LCD monitor is 17 inches diagonally, a 19 inch monitor is 19 inches diagonal or about 1.75 inches larger than my example of the CRT tube.

Another little known glich in monitor measurements is how the diagonal measurement of a widescreen monitor reduces the overall height of the monitor which in turn reduces the actual size of a standard 4:3 to a smaller size.

Flat Screen TV basically refers to two technologies: Plasma and LCD. The advances in these two technologies have enabled TV makers to build thin, lightweight TV screens with a large picture area. Plasma and LCD both offer similarly large, lightweight, flat screen TV's but the similarities are skin deep for their inner workings are different.

Plasma or LCD?

Plasma and LCD TVs generally look similar however they use very different technologies. Plasma utilizes a grid of tiny cells of gas plasma that light up and create a picture when charged by precise electrical voltages. LCD (liquid crystal display) screens on the other hand are made of liquid crystals sandwiched between two glass plates and create images by varying the amount of electrical charge applied to the crystals. Both Plasma and LCD offer excellent picture quality. The following are their strengths and weaknesses and edge over the other.

1. Plasma screens can display blacks more accurately compared to LCD. Thus, pictures in a Plasma TV have richer contrast and better detail especially in dark TV and movie scenes. LCD TV's are catching up however.

2. Plasma TV has better viewing angles than LCD TV. How far you can sit on either side of the screen before the qualities of the pictures are affected is what the "viewing angle" is. In LCD TVs, brightness and color tend to shift when angled too far while that of Plasma TVs remain solid.

3. Plasma TV can produce brighter color while light leakages in LCD screens affect the color saturation.

4. Plasma TVs are priced relatively less than their LCD counterparts especially in the large screen segment. Plasma TVs offer much larger sizes than LCDs, yet are still priced lower.

5. LCD has a higher native resolution than plasma TVs of the same size. This results to sharper images and makes LCD TV the better choice for HDTV.

6. LCD TVs consume almost 30% less power than Plasma TVs.

7. LCD TVs are generally lighter than similar sized Plasmas.

8. Among the two, LCD screens have a longer life span than plasma screens. LCDs can last up to 60,000 hours compared to Plasma that average from 30,000 to 60,000 hours.

9. Plasma TVs are more prone to screen burn-ins compared to LCDs although newer plasma technology are less susceptible to these.

If you are looking for a large flat screen TV, Plasma TV is recommended. Plasma TVs can give you better value for your money. The price difference between Plasma TVs and LCD TVs is big. However, if you have money to burn, then LCD TV is the better choice especially if you want the sharpest images. For smaller flat screen TVs at the range of 15” to 36”, LCD is the way to go. Firstly, if you decide to use a larger screen resolution than the native resolution, things can appear to be blockier and unbalanced. The picture quality will not be as good in other words.

If you are a heavy duty gamer, than flat panel monitors generally do not have the required response rates in terms of pixel response times compared with cathode ray tubes. This also applies to anything that requires similar capacities as gaming such as high end video and graphics editing.

LCD flat panel monitors generally do not last as long as cathode ray tubes. In practice, this means you can't leave on a flat panel monitor the same way you would do so for a cathode ray tube. If you do so there is a chance that it will lose it's brightness over time. Therefore it's necessary to shut off the LCD monitor every now and then to prevent this from happening, otherwise you will probably need to replace your LCD flat panel monitor every one to two years.

So after listing these disadvantages, is the verdict simply to not purchase an LCD flat panel monitor. Of course not. Up till the late nineties, CRT monitors were the standard and the norm. Since the introduction of LCD monitors, more and more people have started to buy this new technology. Colour:
The quality and clarity of colour is still better on CRT monitors when compared to a standard LCD monitor. Brightness:

Size and Weight:

Contrast:

How to Clean your Monitor

Even if you never touch the screen of your monitor, it somehow has a tendency to collect dirt, dust, and fingerprints. Here are instructions on how to clean it.

When cleaning any computer component (this includes the monitor) the standard advice is do not spray any liquid on the component and do not use so much liquid on the cloth that it runs off the cloth. Instead dampen a cloth with the liquid and then wipe the component with the damp cloth. The reason for this is that the liquid could seep inside of the case through cracks or vents and short out or ruin the electrical circuitry. As added protection against this happening, you should unplug the component before cleaning and not plug it in until any liquid that may seep inside has a chance to dry (like overnight).

If you clean the screen when it is off, you will be able to see the dirt and smudges better.
Before cleaning, you need to figure out what type of screen you have. Either the screen has a hard glass surface or it is soft. If the screen surface is soft to the touch or if it changes color when you touch it, it is soft. Otherwise, it is hard. CRT monitors (which are the old type of monitor and TV that is not flat), most touch screens, and most tablet screens are hard, while most LCD or flat panel display screens are soft.

There are some special don't for cleaning a soft screen. Don't use a paper towel or any cloth that could scratch the screen. Don't use ordinary glass cleaner (ammonia based liquids, like Windex). And don't press hard on the screen. Pressing hard anywhere on the screen could damage it (I know because my laptop screen has a permanent light spot on it because of this).
First try cleaning the soft screen with a dry, soft cotton cloth. If that does not clean it good enough, put water or rubbing alcohol on the cloth. Only dampen the cloth. Do not get it so wet that the liquid runs down the screen.

With a hard screen made of glass (as on a CRT monitor) you can use ordinary glass cleaner, but if the screen has anti-glare protection or some other special surface the ammonia in the cleaner could ruin it, so it is best just to steer clear of those types of cleaners. Water or alcohol should work fine. Hard screens do not require a light touch as the soft screens do.

Once the screen is clean, turn your attention to the rest of the monitor. Wipe off the back, top, and sides or better yet, vacuum it off being sure to suck out any dust that has accumulated in the vents. Be careful not to let any cleaning solution run or drip through the vents. While we are talking about the vents, never let books or papers stacked on the monitor obstruct the vents. The vents are there for a reason. Obstructed vents can cause the monitor to overheat or even catch on fire.

Even though the inside of a conventional monitor (CRT) can get quite dusty, it is not recommended to clean the inside unless you are an experienced technician because the picture tube contains high voltage even after the power has been shut off.
A dusty, smudgy monitor may not harbor dangerous bacteria which could make you sick or even kill you, but still, don't you think it is important to be able to see the screen? So, come on, get up off your chair, find a soft cloth and water, and clean your monitor now.

There are two kinds of touch screen displays. The more conventional display is the CRT or the Cathode Ray Tube, whereas the LCD or the Liquid Crystal Display is the more modern display technology. Despite its apparent newness, LCD is making big waves in display technology. LCD is gaining in popularity primarily because it saves both space and energy. Combined with a touch screen display and LCD, display is the hallmark of today’s age. An LCD touch screen is more compact, efficient, and like any other touch screen it is easy to use.

The touch screen LCD display is best understood when seen in comparison with its more established predecessor: the CRT touch screen. The absolutely divergent technologies make the CRT and the LCD display characteristics very different. Not only that, but LCD also has an edge when it comes to size. LCD monitors are compact and lightweight. Typically, an LCD touch screen will take up only a third of the space occupied by a CRT touch screen of the same size.

Newer LCD screens are available even in 15- and 17-inch sizes. Until recently, 17-inch touch screens used only CRT monitors.
